FAQs

We have provided some questions we often get about combustions heaters and the need to keep them clean and well maintained.

Why?

Why must a chimney or flue be cleaned?

Products of combustion build up in chimneys and flues that can cause fires. Two of these substances are Creosote and resins which are formed when wood is burned incompletely. When a fire does not have enough oxygen (a "smokey" fire) creates vapours that condense when they come into contact with the flue and stick to it. This risk can be minimised by ensuring there is adequate combustion, making a hot, clean-burning fire.

Frequency?

How often should a chimney or flue be cleaned?

It depends on how frequently a combustion heater is being used and the quality of firewood, however annually is highly recommended. The build up of substances such as Creosote and resins can cause smoke and may trigger your smoke detectors. This is a clear sign that the chimney or flue needs cleaning. Best practice is to ensure sweeping and cleaning forms part of regular household maintenance.

The best time to sweep and clean is after the winter season, however can be done at anytime.

Time it takes?

How long does it take to sweep and clean?

A standard sweep or clean usually takes 1.5 hours. However once the sweep and clean is done, we do a thorough inspection and will recommend any maintenance we deem is necessary for safe operation. Proceeding with any additional work is optional and can usually be done on the same day or can be done at a later visit.
